9-10. And the kings of the earth who committed acts of immorality and lived sensuously with her, will weep and lament over her when they see the smoke of her burning, standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying “Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.-
they mourn because of what is lost for them. They lost their kingdom. They stand back because of fear. They know what happened could happen to them.
11-17. And the merchants ..weep and mourn…laid waste. -
they weep and mourn because of the loss to them. When God sees judgment he sees justice and what is right. When man looks at judgment he only sees how it effects himself.
17-20. And every shipmaster…laid waste. -
the judgment has effected them and they weep and mourn. When man looks at judgment he notices first off how it effects himself. All judgment occured in 1 hour. This gives the idea of suddenness and surety. All the righteous can rejoice because God has pronounced judgment.
21. And a strong angel…any longer -
judgment from God. No longer - all ceases.
22-23. And…any longer. -
six times this phrase is repeated ‘not…any longer.’ Judgment is thorough and severe.
for the merchants…by your sorcery. -
shows the nature of the city, wicked.
24. And in her…on the earth. -
she tormented the faithful.
