In a previous Introduction to Blogging post I wrote about 5 reasons why I blog.

I am following that post up with what I think are the four keys to being a successful blogger.

Success is a relative term, of course, and means different things to different people.  I will define success as paying my sizable Silicon Valley mortgage with revenue from my blogs.

Of course not! is the answer to those who think that is the ONLY measure of success. Achieving your blogging goals is success for you I would presume.

Key # 1 of 4 to be a successful blogger -

Write less, write more.

Visitors to blogs like things short and sweet.

More than three out of four Internet users read blogs and each spends less than a minute at one site.  Do they spend less time at a site because the post is short or is the post short because that’s what readers like? I think it’s because readers like to be KISSed. (Keep It Simple Stupid)

A blog entry is best at 100-200 words.

If a blogger has more to say, s/he should do a series divided into parts 1 and 2 and so on.

Write less per post, but write many posts.

Something magical happens at about 1,000 post entries. Traffic jumps  and begins to grow organically has been my experience on several of my sites.

Search engines find your blog, and readers come from all sorts of places. My last 500 visitors to one of my sites came from 23 different countries.

Oh, have I ever said blogging is fun?

Tomorrow – Key # 2.
