I gave a workshop the other day.

Report: Blog workshop held on how to get more traffic and what you can do with it.

At one point during the workshop I touched on the 20 characteristics of a successful blogger.

On that list, near the top, was the word – Passion.

I jumped up and down, told the story of Jeremiah the prophet and how he could not not preach because whenever he decided he wouldn’t continue, the message of God burned like fire in his bones.  See Jeremiah 20:9.

my bones are burning

I was feeling pretty good about myself and that particular point until I read one of the comments in the feedback forms after the presentation.

“How do you get so passionate about cricket? or Bollywood?” I was asked. Thankfully, I didn’t have to answer that on the spot.

It got me to thinking about what else might motivate a blogger.

The simple answer – hunger. A blogger has to eat, pay the rent, that sort of thing.

When I started blogging more than 4 years ago, I started it as a vocation. I decided I’d make a living at it, pay my mortgage (I do now!), no matter what!

Passion and hunger  – two great motivators.

If you don’t have a message burning inside you to get out, then make the commitment to live off your blogging come what may. Either one of those should keep you motivated.

If not hunger or passion – how do you stay motivated when there is nobody to tell you to write?
